STUDENT ACTIVITIES

The GSA Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization (ESPO) has scheduled the following activities and programs, as part of the Annual Scientific Meeting. Please check the final program for any schedule changes.

GSA Fellows Mentor Program
Saturday, November 22th, 7:00 am - 8:30 am

Attention: Junior Faculty and Post Docs!

Ever want to find out about how those at the top of our discipline made it? Ever want to know where their great ideas came from? Ever want to know how things change as your career matures? Ever want to bounce your ideas off someone with a different point of view? Ever wonder how senior faculty balance family and career?

The GSA Fellows are the keepers of much information that is vital for the development of junior scholars but a connection between senior and junior GSA members is not always an easy thing to accomplish. To this end, the GSA Fellowship Committee has initiated a Mentor Program that takes place at the annual meeting.

If you would like to be part of this new initiative, complete the registration form (click here). Please send the form, along with your curriculum vitae to Lynne Hodgson at:  Lynne.Hodgson@quinnipiac.edu.  We will match applicants to GSA mentors (depending on available mentors and specific career interest areas).  We can only accommodate 25 mentees, so we will accept applicants on a first-come-first served basis.

Once we have determined suitable “matches,” your name and contact information will be sent to the mentors. We will also share the mentors’ information with you so that you can begin a dialogue prior to the GSA annual meeting. During the November meeting in National Harbor, MD, we will hold a breakfast meeting for the Fellows Mentor Program.  Using a small round table discussion format, mentors and mentees will have the opportunity to meet.

Don’t miss your opportunity to learn more from one of our discipline’s most valuable resources, our senior faculty.

Campus Ambassador’s Meeting
Saturday, November 22, 7:00 am - 7:30 am

For those of you who are interested in representing GSA at your local college or university, please attend this brief informational meeting prior to the start of the ESPO breakfast and community in order to learn more about the program and meet current campus ambassadors.

Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization (ESPO) and Sigma Phi Omega (SPO) Breakfast and Community Meeting
Saturday, November 22, 8:00 am – 10:00 am

All ESPO members are welcome to join us for this informational breakfast meeting that provides the opportunity to broaden your understanding of the organization and how it fits within GSA, learn about opportunities to become more involved in ESPO, meet the executive committee members, and network with your fellow colleagues who share a common interest in aging.

ESPO 101 Dessert and Networking Symposium
Saturday, November 22, 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Supported by the University of Southern California, Davis School of Gerontology and the Gerontology Program, Health Sciences, Towson University

This symposium is designed to provide thorough information about ESPO including its origins, evolution, and future directions in addition to providing information about the nominations/election process for ESPO leadership positions. Part of this symposium will include time for “speed networking” with fellow ESPO members as well as refueling with some sweet treats. Space is limited and will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. Please contact Kara Bottiggi Dassel at kara.bottiggi@chw.edu if you are interested in participating.

Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization Wine and Cheese & Fellows Meet the Students (ESPO Members and GSA Fellows Only)

Supported by AARP, Office of Academic Affairs

This is an event not to be missed! The ESPO wine and cheese is organized in conjunction with the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE). This event provides an informal setting in which to network with other ESPO members as well as GSA fellows. The winners of the Interdisciplinary Paper Award, Poster Awards, and the Civic Engagement in an Older America Student Paper Award will be presented at this event.
